LIS 501 is one of the two required courses for all Master's Students. It is usually taught in the Fall Semester. In recent semesters LIS 501 has been team-taught by Les Gasser and Carole Palmer. J. Stephen Downie usually teaches the LEEP sections. The other course MS students have to take is 502 which used to be 390.

I took this class (501) via LEEP with Stephen Downie Fall 2004 and it was...ok. Its everything in LIS in 15 weeks, plus introduction to statistics, plus introduction to evaluating research, plus introduction to relational database design, plus...you get the idea - very overwhelming. My section was 6:45p - 8:45p on Wednesdays, which was a good time for my schedule. I thought we had good discussions on our web boards, which I think would have been much different if we had to come to a TA session every week and come up with something smart to say. On the other hand, it's pretty hard to do group projects without personal contact, and we had to do two for this class.

I would have liked to see more about careers in LIS rather than just research in LIS, but adding more content to an already full class probably isn't a good idea, and I don't really know what should be removed. The on campus was a preservation lecture, a movie about Paul Otlet, a discussion about the movie plus group work time. This would be a good time to do something more practical at the UIUC library, for example, rather than more lectures.
