[edit] FIELD EXAM PROCEDURES FOR SPRING 2005

Following a faculty discussion this morning the guidelines for the SPRING 2005 FIELD EXAM are as follows:

Students taking the exam will work with their committee (three GSLIS faculty members, including at least one DSC member) to put together a list of 30 readings; in the case that more than one student is working in the same area, those students will compare and discuss lists, but complete convergence is not required.

The exam will present students with FIVE articles not on the students' lists, and the exam will consist of answering questions that draw on both the students' list and the five articles, and any other relevant knowledge of the field.

The format of the exam is a TWO-WEEK TAKE-HOME, with five questions (though not necessarily one question per article); the total length of the exam is not to exceed 7500 words (approx. 25-30 pages of double spaced text).

STUDENTS: If you are intending to take the exam this spring, please discuss the exam with your faculty advisor, and notify the DSC as soon as possible.

If you intend to take the exam in the future, please be aware that we are continuing to discuss and refine this exam. While we will not change major features of the exam for students who are about to take the exam, the precise format of the exam itself may evolve over time. Both students and faculty will be kept informed, with adequate notice, as this happens.
