[edit] Rick's Automotive

54 E Springfield Ave Champaign, IL 61820 (217) 351-2662 http://tinyurl.com/2yvkxq

"Rick is great. I started going there about 6 months ago after becoming, uh, dissatisfied by the dealer mechanics at O'Brien's in Champaign. The first time I was there he went and filled out all the warranty-related service paperwork in my owner's manual, which the dealership had never touched but should have been filling out all along. The guy also maintains and races several older sports cars in his spare time, which makes me feel warm and fuzzy that he knows what he's doing."

"Rick's Auto Service is stellar, as is Drollinger. Rick is probably nearer, but they've both been good good mechanics. I kind of like Drollinger better, because he's a reader, and always has Clancy novels on his desk."

"Rick's Automotive is always highly rated, but sometimes backlogged."

"Jill Gengler recommended Rick's and I've never looked for another mechanic since. Rick is great -- he's rather quiet and aloof, but is honest and rocks. I have an aged 13-year-old Toyota that has treated me really well, overall, but that sometimes needs work. Rick has saved me a lot of $ in his super-competent way (and has helped me get to Massachusetts and back a few times with no trouble). I strongly recommend him. The only issue is that he's so popular that it sometimes can take a week or so to get in. Though last I knew he was hiring more folks to deal with that."

  • Lincoln/Mercury: 300 Carriage Center Court, Champaign, IL 61820 (217) 352-0462
  • Buick/Pontiac/GMC: 100 Carriage Center Court,Champaign, IL 61820 (217) 352-7901

"Although they may not be the cheapest repair shop in town, I've gotten great service from the Nissan dealer in Savoy."

"I have a Nissan Maxima and I lamely go to the Nissan dealer on Neil St. (way down south by the Savoy 16 theatre). Sometimes the tech guys can be really condescending - not surprising - but my car has been well-treated by them and the Head of Customer Service (can't remember her name) is really open to feedback about any of the staff. The dealer also has shuttle service, which is convenient. I never have figured out if I should tip the driver or not, so I don't."

"My car was making a bad noise too, so I took it to the Nissan dealership is Savoy. They were nice and didn't try to get me to do all kinds of things to my car. The only bad thing is they were slow to get my car back to me (3 days). Good Luck!"

"[My wife] really likes the Saturn dealership place, and they seem to be good. I have been going to Worden-Martin. They are pretty good, but I would say of the two places the Saturn dealership is probably a better place to go."

[edit] Peter B's

509 N Lierman Ave Urbana, IL 61802 (217) 367-3821 http://www.peterb.com/index.htm

"They are awesome, but really, really in demand."

"I initially went to Peter B.'s for car repair and wasn't that impressed."

"It takes forever to get an appointment here but if you do they seem to do a good job. It is not an especially cheap operation but my perception is that they never ripped me off and Peter B himself often drove the car with me to make sure everything was fixed when I picked up the car. Additionally, I brought the car back when I continued to experience some problems with the vehicle they had worked on and they charged me nothing for any of the work they did that day, which was classy. I would recommend Peter B if you can wait a week or two for the appointment." -Steve M

[edit] TK Service Center

806 Perkins Road Urbana, IL 61802 (217) 344-0800 http://www.tkservicecenter.com

"We used to take the jellybean to TK Service in Urbana. Very good communication and we were always very happy with their work. They weren't cheap and they did have some Christian propaganda in the otherwise very nicely furnished waiting room, but they explained everything well and in writing, with a detailed estimate before doing any kind of work."

[edit] Saturn of Champaign County

1402 N Dunlap Ave Savoy, IL 61874 (217) 352-4700 http://www.saturnofchampaign.com/

"[My wife] really likes the Saturn dealership place, and they seem to be good. I have been going to Worden-Martin. They are pretty good, but I would say of the two places the Saturn dealership is probably a better place to go."

[edit] Beaumont Alignment Plus

Beaumont is also a certified installer for www.tirerack.com. So, if you need tires, you can buy them at tirerack.com and get them installed locally no problems.

[edit] Drollinger Auto Repair

505 N Walnut St Champaign, IL 61820 (217) 359-1928

"Rick's Auto Service is stellar, as is Drollinger. Rick is probably nearer, but they've both been good good mechanics. I kind of like Drollinger better, because he's a reader, and always has Clancy novels on his desk."

"I can't speak for the quality of their work but their pricing seems high. I got a quote from them for a very simple job which was 25% - 40% higher than their competitors were charging for the same work. When I went to get my car back they surprised me by wanting to charge 1/2 hour labor for giving me the quote. I won't be back."
