The old-school qualifying examination for PhD students. It consisted of answering 4 essays in 24 hours based on your knowledge of the Core Reading List. This exam was formally replaced in Fall 2004 after the last cohort of eligible examinees finished their exam. All PhD students from here out must complete the new Field Exam. The field exam was first offered in Fall 2004. This new exam replaces the old Core exam and the Speciality Exam with a single, 2-week, 5-essay test. The response to this new exam has been overall positive.
