(Dave Dubin publishes under the names: Dave Dubin, David Dubin, and his dissertation is published under David S. Dubin)
(Allen Renear uses the strings "staff42" and "Dave Dubin" to refer to the creator and co-author of many papers. =) )

Dave was born on Virtue Day, which is the day before Genius Day. Dave is both virtuous and brilliant. He is also kind, wise, and has a great sense of humor.

Dave loves board games, logic puzzles, and a good argument. He is a well-known proponent of open source software. Dave has a gnu coffee cup.

Dr. Dubin is the enlightened leader of the GSLIS Research Writing Group -- a nurturing discussion group where GSLIS students, staff, and faculty can take their works-in-progress for feedback and constructive criticism from each other.

Dave is also the principal creator of BECHAMEL -- a logic-based system for testing semantic rules for markup languages.

If you need an expert in statistics, Information Retrieval, Document Semantics, or Identity Conditions of Documents, Dave Dubin is your man. He once wrote an unofficial analysis of the MS curriculum for use as an advising document (though he no longer has advisees in the MS program).

David Dubin has a Gina Number of 1.

Dave did his Phd work at the University of Pittsburgh where the famous Robert Korfhage was his advisor. Dave's dissertation (1996) entitled "Structure in document browsing spaces" [PDF] investigates the issues of clarity and interpretation in visualization interfaces (like VIBE).

[edit] Quotes from Dave Dubin

"I tried playing games on a computer, but I couldn't get the board to balance, and so all the plastic pieces kept sliding off on to the floor. Eventually I went back to playing them on a table like a normal person."

Quote regarding Open Source Software and liberation from you-know-who:

  • 1) Start thinking and asking questions.
  • 2) Take control of your computer instead of expecting it simply to work.
  • 3) Lobby for change in your workplace -- not to give up Word, Excel and Access right away, but just to commit to the open standards that will liberate you from dependence on them.
  • 4) Finally, switch to free software when it becomes clear that it makes sense."

- these quotes were taken from "Public Conversation with Jenny Benevento."

Dave is also known by: Dubinator, but he may not realize this.

  • Um, he reads the wiki, at least every-so-often, so I'm sure he knows.

Dave does know now, and that is what Wikis are all about, sharing and learning information. Well of course he knows, you dolt. He knows everything. Check Dubinate.
