[edit] Dental Insurance
For the record, we're covered 100% for routine check-ups and cleaning, plus I believe one set of x-rays per year. Basic fillling and extractions are covered 80/20 (you pay 20%, insurance pays 80%). Anything else, unless it's randomly covered under medical, isn't covered - which means I paid out of pocket for my root canal. :(

[edit] Finding a Dentist aside from recommendations given below
I'd recommend checking out the cmi.* newsgroups, available from http://news.ks.uiuc.edu/ or http://www.prairienet.org/ The cmi.consumer newsgroup is incredibly helpful for tracking down all sorts of things in the CU area. Also, cmi.consumer.gourmand (for foot/restaurant reviews/critque) and cmi.consumer.isp for Internet provider questions are excellent.
I think Prairienet has a membership fee, but news.ks is free.

[edit] Supplementary Dental Insurance
i never trusted ghettodental [Delta Dental Insurance--Student Plan at UIUC] (esp after working with folks from champaign county health care consumers - CCHC) so i never went to any of their dentists. i basically bit the bullet and paid out-of-pocket/on plastic what ghettodental wouldn't cover. but you might contact CCHC and ask them about supplemental insurance.

[edit] Bacheller David, Dr. Bacheller
Re: dentist, I really like:
BACHELLER DAVID DMD 305 W CLARK ST 61820 (217)352-5031
It's a very small operation, but he really seems to know what he's doing. I've not only gone to him for regular teeth cleaning, but also rather extensive work as well. I've always been veryy happy with him. He doesn't do my taxes, however.

I think the replies for the dentist continued off list. I referred [Anonymous] to Dr. Bachellor (yes, seriously). I think she went with him. He's very nice and his wife is a librarian (if that means anything). I didn't pay anything up front. He's on Clark in Champaign. I don't have his information on me, but he's listed on that Delta Dental Plan brochure that we got way back when.
Good luck!

[edit] Champaign Dental: Jackson Kuo, Erika Ygna and Dr. Z
I go to Dr Jackson Kuo at Champaign Dental (on Neil about a block south of Osco). I believe that whole office is covered by our dental plan (Delta Dental). I've been pleased with their service so far, despite the fact that what I needed done wasn't covered by the dental plan.
...
I'd recommend Champaign Dental - alternately, you can go to Delta Dental's website and request a list of dentists covered by their insurance in your area - the website is:

Good luck! And Ingbert, feel free to post this to the wiki if it's helpful.

I went there for a cleaning. They gave me flouride without telling me it wasn't covered by delta dental so I had to pay $19 for it. Otherwise exam, cleaning, and x-rays were covered. I'm not sure I believe all the things they are calling cavities need filling; I'll see about a second opinion. -Anon
Does anyone know if Kuo is still at Champaigne Dental???
I'm going to ditto Elizabeth's suggestion. I've had a fair amount of work done there from Dr. Erika Ynga (who isn't the gentlest with a needle, mind you) but the hygienists and receptionists are also pretty good and aren't afraid to talk money, if you are concerned. Monica the hygenist is also excellent.
I just had an emergency visit with "Dr. Z" (not sure of his full name, but that is what he goes by in the office) who was very gentle and had excellent bedside manner. He even called to make sure I was feeling better, and that I had followed up with an oral surgeon. Plus, he's not so bad to look at. ;)
- Annette Lesak
I went to Delta Dental and only saw Dr. Ynga for 5 min, and she was not very polite. They tried to scare me into doing an oral cancer check, their billing was very obscure, and their estimated costs completely overcharged me for everything (I'd be paying ~45% and twice they were going to charge me $50 deductible which we're not supposed to pay). I told them to get out of my mouth and am going somewhere else. By the way, the bill for them just to look in my mouth (covered by my insurance), without them even cleaning was $160. Dr. Bacheller only charged $120 including the cleaning.
I went to Dr. Kuo and he was very unprofessional. He was trying to sale everything. And he told me i had 12 cavities and i was just seen by a dentist 6 months before. I thought he was very rude. His hygienist was great. But I won't go back to him.

I'm afraid I must STRONGLY recommend AGAINST this doctor/facility. I went to Champaign Dental and after a quickie examination they told me I needed over $2000 worth of procedures. Now I have always had perfect teeth so when I got a second opinion (from Dr. William Thompson - whom I would recommend), I found out that I needed NONE of the procedures recommended by Dr. Kuo. Not only did I not need them, but they would have actually caused injury to do them. Horrible, horrible doctor. AVOID CHAMPAIGN DENTAL unless you want to spend a LOT of money for services that you don't need. -Jimi Jones
I had almost the exact same experience as Jimi. I had an appointment with Dr. Kuo, I don't remember the hygienist's name. When I went I didn't even get the cleaning that I'd made the appointment for because of all their pre-cleaning procedures, which screwed me over since they could only reschedule me for past the six month mark, meaning I could only get one cleaning in the year. They told me I needed five fillings and a lot of dental surgery for about $2000. I happened to be going home the next weekend and saw my childhood dentist for a second opinions. She said "if I did all the work they told you to get, I wouldn't have to be working weekends." She said that it appeared to her like they were trying to take advantage of students. So, again, if you go here and they tell you to get any work done, get a second opinion. -Margaret Heller
I do not suggest you go to Champaign Dental whatsoever and agree with the above evaluations. They completely ripped off my hapless wife who is overwhelmed by people who pressure her for procedures. They charged her for thousands of dollars for 2 or 3 visits and numerous cavities. She probably needed some work as she hadn't been to the dentist in some time, but it is highly unlikely she needed this much work. We are seeking a second opinion for their current estimate of 800+ dollars of new work. They also use extremely expensive non-covered routine procedures (teeth cleaning costs you a fortune and will not be covered by insurance, who are no fools about this sort of thing apparently). They even have the gall to send you mail when your insurance money renews so they can blow it all for you immediately. Besides this, it is a fairly slick operation with plenty of staff and fairly friendly hygienists. I cannot specifically recommend any other C-U area dentists, but going to this dentist scared me into returning to my hometown trusted dentist every time I need a dental appointment. -Steve M

STAY AWAY from Champaign Dental. I spoke with a hygienist friend of mine about the treatment and all the sudden cavities Dr Kuo found. She said walk away. I won't write my name because I am considering filing a formal complaint both with my ins. company and the dental board. This place will drill and fill healthy teeth. Stay away.
[edit] Thomas W. Fonner
He is an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon and I recently got my wisdom teeth removed by him. He was excellent during my consultation and gave lots of great information and answered questions in detail and at length. The receptionists were also helpful with pricing information. You do not need to pay up front--they first bill insurance, and then bill you if the insurance doesn't cover anything. I'm also really pleased to say the combination of the student insurance and Delta Dental is covering more than 3/4 of my wisdom teeth extraction.

[edit] Jeffrey Frerichs
My Dentist:
Jeffrey Frerichs 2301 Village Green Place, Suite A Champaign, IL 61822 217-352-3455 [(corner of Duncan and Windsor)]
I only go for serious work. Cleanings and check ups I use Parkland Dental Clinic [see next entry] because Frerichs is $120 for cleaning and check up, and Parkland is $10 including X-rays. Plus, the hygenisists take a lot longer and do a better job.

They have Cleaning and X-Rays for $10 - go there FIRST if possible. (X-rays can be sent over to your dentist - who probably would've charged you $80 - $100 for the same X-rays)
i went to parkland dental clinic for a cleaning and xrays, they did a good job and the price was great, tho'it did take 2 visits for them to do eveything.

[edit] Dr. Tschopp (Savoy)
i go to dr. tschopp in savoy. i couldn't recommend him enough. don't know what his emergency policy is with new patients.

i also went to dr. tschopp. he's great. however, he's not a delta dentist (which is probably a result of him being so great...).
