Doc Study
From GSLISWiki
The Doctoral Study is a study space for Doctoral Students, located in room 212 (up the hidden staircase and behind User Services).
[edit] Doc Study Makeover
A discussion begun in Fall 2006 regarding decorations and spiffyness of the Doc Study. Add your comments here about what you'd like/not like to see on the walls of the Doc Study.
- [CAMERON] I have an old laptop that I've been wanting to hack into something cool -- like a digital picture frame or some sort of display (interactive or otherwise). Would anyone be interested in hacking on this for the Doc Study? Maybe some sort of activity awareness monitor -- use a cheap webcam to monitor movement in the space and display it visually.
- [Richard] Maybe a good project for our CSCW Make fest. Is there some other information visualization we could hack together? e.g. a visualization of citations from current doc students? visualization of reseach networks?
[edit] Suggestions
- Find out if we can get some money to install a poster system like they have in the ISRL, so that the walls aren't being abused.
- Create a committee to rotate what's on the walls. Divide space into semi-perrmanent and rotating gallery spaces. Need to get volunteers to commit to working on this. Appoint a rotating "guest curator" position. Curators would be responsible for soliciting/collecting materials to be displayed.
- Create a collection statement for books left in the Doc Study shelves. How long should things be retained? (e.g. old sale catalogs, etc.).
- get a decent rug to put in the alcove.
- keep it minimalist
[edit] Doc Study Restructuring (completed spring 2005)
There is currently some discussion (some heated) over revamping the space to support all the doctoral student needs. John Unsworth has given us a budget and our Doctoral Study Committee (not to be confused with the Doctoral Studies Committee) is investigating our options.
Over spring break (spring05), the fabled re-work of the Doc Study is happening! By the way, if you happen to see this (and missed the email), all your stuff needs to be out of there by spring break if you want to keep it.
The Doc Study Lockers are now available for use! Well, 27/45 are, at least. See the Doc Study Lockers page for more details on how you, yes you, can get your very own locker!
