Doc Study Lockers
From GSLISWiki
The long awaited lockers are finally ready for use! Well, 36 out of 45 of them are at least. This means that you can have any locker in the four cabinets which have been installed in the Doc Study, or, in other words, Lockers 10-45 are available. Note, they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so get one while supplies last!

[edit] To Get a Locker:
- Pick a locker, any locker.
- Go to Sally and see if it is unclaimed. If it is claimed, go back to step (1), do not pass go, do not collect $200. Otherwise, proceed to step (3).
- Sally will record your name, place it in the appropriate envelope, and tell you your combination.
- Go upstairs and make sure you can open your locker. If you have trouble figuring out how to use the lockers, Ingbert is offering free tutorials on an appointment or serendipitous basis.
- Put your name on the locker so people know it is claimed.
- The locker is yours. Put your stuff in it. Etc.
[edit] To Use a Locker:
- Have your combination cognitively accessible (either memorized or legibly written down on a surface that you are able to read while fiddling with the lock).
- Clear the lock. This means spin the dial in a clockwise direction so that it completes approximately 3 full revolutions.
- By spinning the dial in a clockwise direction, find the first number in your combination, and line it up with the red dot on the top of the dial. Do not spin the dial in a counter-clockwise direction at any point, no matter how short a distance. If you accidentally overshoot your first number, spin the dial all the way around in a clockwise direction until you get it right. If at any point you mess up, you will have to return to step (2) to clear the lock again, and start over again.
- By spinning the dial in a counter-clockwise direction, complete a full revolution of the dial (i.e., pass the first number of your combination again), and then continue to the second number in your combination (i.e., line it up with the red dot). If you miss the number, go back to step (2).
- By spinning the dial in a clockwise direction, turn it until you get about five notches before your third number. Then, press inward and keep turning until you can turn the dial no further, then, holding the dial in such a way that you do not let it turn, pull, and the locker should open. You should be able to tell that it worked by the resistance to your turning (you'll know what I mean when you try it out).
- Do whatcha need to do, and then close it. It should not require a great amount of effort to close (slamming it should not usually be required).
[edit] To Retrieve a Lost Combination:
- Go to Sally and tell her your locker number. She will look up to see that it is yours, and then tell you your combination.
- If you still can't get the locker open, one of the people in the office will go upstairs with you with the master key, open up the cabinet, and allow you to retrieve your stuff (and only your stuff).
[edit] Caveats:
- It is very easy to mess up opening the lockers, especially when you are not familiar with how these locks work. If you are having trouble, ask me, and I will be happy to show you how to work them. I have personally tested each locker in the range 19-45, so I know they work. The locks are somewhat fiddily (to use Mike's expression), and so even if you do everything right, they do miss every-so-often.
- Realize, these lockers are not to be regarded as safe-deposit boxes. Do not keep your 27 karat diamond heirloom in them. They are an extra level of security provided so that if someone is walking through the building looking for a laptop to steal, it is much more difficult for them to steal one.
[edit] What is going on:
The missing cabinet of lockers (lockers 1-9) was damaged upon arrival at GSLIS, so it has been sent back, and we are waiting for it to be fixed. The cabinet farthest from the wall (lockers 10-18) is also defective, but we did not discover this until we started to try and use the lockers, and found that some of them did not work. In addition, the person who bolted the combination to the inside of the locker, bolted it so that some of the numbers of the combination are underneath the locking mechanism, and can only be guessed at. Sally has placed a call to the company regarding these defective lockers, and we are waiting to hear back from them.
- Update
Lockers 10-18 are now available for use, and the combinations have been removed from the inside of the lockers. We are still waiting for lockers 1-9.
- Update
Lockers 1-9 have arrived (a while ago) and are available for use. The bottom lockers in column 10-18 are much more difficult to use. I would avoid claiming them, unless you enjoy a challenge.
