drinks? i don't see no stinkin' drinks!

Page Recovered! Go Cameron!

Drinking_GSLIS is a list of announcements and open invitations for various informal social gatherings not sponsored by the school. GSLIS students and their guests are the usual partakers, but anyone is welcome to join. Imbibing is optional and the term "drinking" is a euphemism for a general symposium-like environment.

Although Drinking_GSLIS may seem undercover, it is not in fact. It is a Yahoo group and very much open to everyone. And really, spread the word--the list isn't meant to be exclusive (it's member only due to concerns about spam and privacy, among other things). It's great for passing around random items of interest, and best for expressing a sudden need to get away from LIS work with other GSLISers and hang out somewhere in Chambana. Its moderators "moderate" in the loosest sense of the term and thus almost never go out of their way to invite anyone, but instead rely on others finding them. E-mail its moderators today!

[edit] Drinking GSLIS History

Many stories of its creation exist, but it was from a large gathering of first years who would hang out at Espresso Royale after 501 (then 380). See also Rudy Leon and Eric Sizemore.

Take a trip down memory lane with these Drinking_GSLIS memories--priceless!

(Edit by Rudy, unsusre of wiki protocols) Actually, Drinking_GSLIS is a hidden list on Yahoo! Groups -- there was some concern (maybe only in my mind) about general access to librarian social events. Too many strange fetishes out there about librarians letting loose!

[edit] One Version of the Creation Legend

(as told by Marjorie Snook (nÃÆ'ÂÂ(c)e Hall) and generally approved by Greg Schwartz):

"Greg kind of started it by just emailing everyone that he knew to ask them to go out. At first we stuck to campus--White Horse is the one that sticks out as the early place that we all hung out.

Then other people would suggest activities (such as karaoke, which may have first been suggested by Dennis, though I can't remember), and just copy the list of addresses from Greg's email and maybe add a few names of people they knew. Once I did this and forgot to send Greg himself the email and he was a little miffed with me.

It started to get a little haphazard, since we were all just copying email lists, and several different versions had been spawned. It had gotten a little cliquey-seeming, so Rudy stepped in with the list, which made it more [sic?] confusing and avoided people getting unintentionally left out."

[edit] Another Version of the Creation Legend

There are two versions of Creation in the Bible, which don't really fit together but don't entirely conflict either. Such is the case with drinking_GSLIS as well.

At first-year orientation in August 23, 2002, Kate Freding stood up at the end and encouraged everyone to meet at Murphy's after orientation at 5 p.m. Lots of each email addresses were exchanged, and Greg took it upon himself to encourage more gatherings. The second one may have indeed been at the White Horse. The list was formed later by Rudy so that people wouldn't get left out of the communication, as quickly began to happen. The list membership mostly included first-year in 2002-2003, but did have a few Ph.D. student members and a few second-year students.
