Faculty Rep Duties

From GSLISWiki

Every year, one PhD Student Representative is elected (or simply nominated if there is no competition) to serve as the Faculty Representative.

[edit] Responsibilities

Faculty Reps have the following duties:

  1. Attend every Faculty Meeting. If they cannot attend, then it is their responsibility to find a substitute for that meeting. This substitute can be either one of the other reps, or another student who is willing to take over for that meeting.
  2. Distribute meeting minutes to the PhD students. I don't think the Masters student rep is required to distribute minutes to the Masters Students.
    • The meeting minutes may require a bullet point summary, since most PhD Students won't have the time to read them carefully (or at all).
  3. Obtain student input regarding issues relevant to the faculty meetings.
  4. Represent student interests during the committee meetings.
  5. Communicate any decisions of import to the students you represent.
  6. For the PhD student rep, schedule one to two "Meeting with the Dean"s for each semester, where students can meet directly and have a conversation with the Dean.
    • If there is nothing to talk about, these conversations can be brief, but still should be scheduled.
  7. Serve as a substitute if one of the other representatives (curriculum, DSC for the PhD Rep) cannot make it to their meeting.

[edit] Meeting Times & Scheduling

Faculty meetings are the only regular meetings of all the committee rep positions. Faculty meetings are generally held on Wednesdays in the afternoons for two hours, but only one hour is an open session which student reps are allowed to attend. No GSLIS classes are typically scheduled for this time period, so having class conflicts is usually not a significant problem unless you are taking classes outside the department. As an aside, the open sessions are open to everybody--you don't have to be a rep to attend.
