Field Exam

The field exam must be taken by all PhD Students at some point in their career, before they defend their Dissertation Proposal. The official Field Exam webpage can be found at:
http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/programs/phd/field-exam.html
To take the field exam, students must prepare a list of 30 readings (mostly articles, can include some books) in their chosen field. This list must be approved of by both their committee (consisting of their advisor, a member of the DSC, and another faculty member in their field), and by the DSC. This list then is the background reading for the exam itself. The exam consists of a two week written portion followed by an oral after the written part has been completed and reviewed. For more information about the exact nature of the five questions and format of the exam, please refer to the latest update from the DSC which should be posted in this category shortly after it has been released.

[edit] Latest Field Exam Updates:
- From the DSC meeting August 31, 2005:
- The Field Exam dates have been set for Nov. 4th through Nov. 18th for the written portion of the exam for Fall 2005.
- It is now policy that the written portion of the Field Exam will be fixed as the two weeks prior to Thanksgiving Break in the Fall Semester. Thus, do not schedule yourself to attend conferences which will conflict with those dates.
- Special allowances will only be made if you are the only one taking the exam in your field, or if your exam is completely different from everybody else's exam. But, the DSC is very reluctant to make any special allowances on the dates of the exams.
