FIELD EXAM PROCEDURES FOR SPRING 2005
The guidelines for the SPRING 2005 FIELD EXAM are:
Students taking the exam will work with their committee to put together a list of 30 readings; in the case that more than one student is working in the same area, those students will compare and discuss lists, but complete convergence is not required.
The exam will present students with FIVE articles not on the students' lists, and the exam will consist of answering questions that draw on both the students' list and the five articles, and any other relevant knowledge of the field.
NEW: For spring 2005, the following option for the exam may be chosen at the discretion of the committee, and with the agreement of the student: An exam format may be used that does not include presenting the student with the five articles. The exam then consists of answering questions that draw on the students' list and any other relevant knowledge of the field.
The format of the exam is a TWO-WEEK TAKE-HOME, with five questions (although not necessarily one question per article), total length of exam is not to exceed 7500 words (approx. 25-30 pages of double spaced text).
If you are advising students who are working toward a spring exam, please share this with them; if you are discussing the field exam with students who expect to take it in the future, please make it clear that the faculty will continue to discuss and refine this new exam in the Ph.D. program, and while we will not change major features of the exam for students who are about to take the exam, the precise format of the exam itself may evolve over time, and both students and faculty will be kept informed, with adequate notice, as this happens.
