a.k.a. DocD. Well, at least he calls himself this (it is his LEEP nickname).
[edit] Personal Habits and Recreation
You can always tell where Stephen has been... he usually leaves behind a double thick paper cup of cold coffee, still 3/4 full. His office is an ongoing experiment of what grows best in cups of cold coffee.
Who's that broadcasting from the LEEP studio? Hark! Do I hear cookies being munched? Lo, it is DocD.
At the bar, Stephen orders a glass of white wine, a glass of water, a cup of coffee, and something to drink.
He is Canadian, and his favorite musician is Bach. While pursuing his music degree, Stephen was rarely, if ever, seen practicing his flute.
He likes to go sailing, and owns his own boat. He says there is a lake nearby, but some of us think he has put wheels on the bottom and sails through the cornfields.

Music Information Retrieval is his area. He teaches some of the core classes and IR classes.
As far as programming goes, he knows how to create hashes (in Perl. In fact, we believe his PhD is built on this particular data structure). If you want to learn how to use them, this may help. http://www.cs.mcgill.ca/~abatko/computers/programming/perl/howto/hash/
J. Stephen Downie has a Gina Number of 1.
He is an esteemed teacher of the LEEP version of 501, and, as such, is a cultural icon.
