Parking
From GSLISWiki
I think I lost my parking guide from Bootcamp, hopefully someone still has theirs and can post it here.
Generally, I think everyone should be aware how to avoid paying to park. I'm sure on-campus students are experts at this, while it takes LEEP students a few semesters to figure out you can park at the school after 5:00pm and on weekends and where the heck the 12 hour meters are located.
[edit] Parking update
So, has anyone found their parking guide? Any advice for boot camp daytime parking? I am staying at a hotel off campus. I'm guessing I'll have to do those $7 a day meter things, but where do I get them and where do they allow me to park in relation to GSLIS? Thanks.
I don't have a car, so I'm not the best source of information, but here's what I know. I hope this helps. -Ingbert
- The all day meters can be found on the top floor of the parking structure whic is accross Daniel Street from GSLIS, I believe.
Summer '05, these meters are unavailable due to construction. -- Kirk
- The meters on the streets belong to Champaign, they need to be fed every 2 hours, and they are active from some time in the morning to rediculously late at night, like 8 pm.
- The meters in the parking lots belong to UIUC, they need to be fed every 2 hours, but they are only active until 5 pm at night. Thus, parking in the lot after 5 pm is a good idea.
- If you park in a metered parking spot between 2 am and whenever the meters are active again, you will be ticketed.
- I have been told that if you call the UIUC Campus Police and tell them that you are a student working late at GSLIS, and are parked in their parking lot, and give them your liscence number, they will refrain from ticketing you.
Info from Parking/Facilities Office
I called the parking office today (July 1) and asked where to park (or not) during the day for boot camp. Here are the options they gave me:
- On the street, feeding Champaign meters every 2 hours (which didn't seem very practical -- "Excuse me professor, could you pause your lecture while I go feed the meters?" NOT. Actually, I think this is pretty common. Rae has mentioned it before! - Kirk
- Lot E14 - for which you can buy a two week pass. It seems to be a LONG way from GSLIS.
I parked there last summer. You can take a bus that drops you off a block from campus, or walk: its only about 15 minutes away. The big advantage is you can park there overnight. If you aren't staying on campus, its probably not worth the trouble - Kirk
- Lot E3 - located at 6th and Gregory, which has university meters that can be fed for the whole day at once (and is only a couple of blocks from GSLIS). Or you can get a day tag (which is apparently good because you can leave and come back and not have to pay twice in one day to park). The tags are $7 per day and available at the parking office (corner of Springfield and Goodwin, hours are M-F, 8-5). Their number is 217-333-3530 if you have any other questions.
Hope that is helpful to someone besides me (though I get the impression I'm the only new LEEPER reading this stuff).
Last year, Sherman Hall which is across the street from GSLIS had 24hr parking available during the summer for a nominal fee. Worth checking out. - Kirk
