[edit] Eclectic Design Research Group
Historically called the CSCW Group, we are a group of students, all of whom work with, take classes from, or are otherwise associated with Professor Mike Twidale. Our interests range broadly accross the spectrum, including everything from museum studies to computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), from human-computer interaction (HCI) to sociotechnical systems, from knowledge management (KM) to distance education. Common themes that cut accross all of these areas include design, rapid iteration, rapid prototyping, and evaluation techniques. Anybody and everybody is welcome to join us. We welcome and yearn for diverse perspectives and contributions.
We try to meet weekly, either at a coffee house, or in the ISRL. The goal of the meetings is to brainstorm ideas, and to get feedback about current interests or research projects. Sometimes, individuals will "present" at the meetings. Such "presentations" can be formal power point presentations, but are usually more along the lines of, "Hey, I was thinking about..."
Join us by signing up on our mailing list, by emailing Cameron Jones, or by showing up at our meetings. This semester we will meet Thursday afternoons from 3-5 pm, starting in the ISRL unless otherwise announced.
[edit] Electronic Publishing Research Group/EPRG
The Electronic Publishing Research Group conducts advanced research in electronic publishing. Our particular focus is understanding digital documents as knowledge representation systems. This involves developing formal models of how documents organize and structure knowledge and then exploring how these models can be used to improve the performance and functionality of digital library technologies, collaboration systems, publishing systems, textbase practice, and educational technology.
Basically, if you enjoyed a class with Allen Renear or Dave Dubin, then you might want to joing EPRG.
Conferences that strike this groups' fancy include:
- Extreme Markup Languages
- Classification Society
- NSF / NSDL Workshop
- Joint International Conference of the Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing and the Association for Computers and the Humanities (ALLC / ACH)
- Dublin Core Conference
- ACM/IEEE-CS joint conference on Digital Libraries
- ACM Symposium on Document Engineering
- American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST)

[edit] Inquiry Research Group
I would recommend Inquiry Research Group led by Chip Bruce. See a brief description below and you can visit Inquiry Reserach Group iLab at
http://ilabs.inquiry.uiuc.edu/ilab/inquiry/
for additional info:
This is a discussion group sponsored by the Community Informatics Initiative.
We focus on research, especially around learning (in schools, libraries, museums, community centers, and other settings). We will consider issues of problem formulation, theory, methodology, analysis, interpretation, writing, and application. The group provides opportunities to share and critique work in progress, discuss research methods or new ideas, or to talk about any sorts of issues related to completing a PhD.
Typically, each meeting starts with a brief presentation of someone's research project, followed by open discussion both to further that project and to draw implicatons for others.
You may subscribe to the Inquiry mailing list via the Web at
https://mail.prairienet.org/mailman/listinfo/inquiry
or via an email message to inquiry-join@mail.prairienet.org. If you like to send an announcement to all group members, write to inquiry@lists.prairienet.org.
