Research Collaboration

The research environment at GSLIS is very collaborative, and we see frequent coauthorship among people at GSLIS, with researchers at other UIUC units, and with colleagues off campus. If you're looking for a coauthor, make a habit of attending the GSLIS Research Writing Group.

An informal mark of prestige at GSLIS is having a low Gina Number. Your Gina Number is the smallest number of edges in the coauthorship graph that links you to Jin Ha Lee. We don't have a strong empirical case that low Gina Numbers are correlated with great erudition and accomplishment, but we can point to many impressive individual examples:

  • XML standards expert C. M. Sperberg-McQueen and Brown University VP for Research Andries van Dam both have Gina Numbers of 2.
  • Slavicist David J. Birnbaum and DBMS Demigod Il-Yeol Song have Gina Numbers of 3.
  • Polymath Fionn Murtagh has a Gina Number of 4.
  • Renowned mathematician Paul ErdÅ‘s has a Gina Number of 6.

For those wishing to compute their own Gina Numbers, we include a portion of the research coauthorship graph below:
