[edit] McKinley Health Center
McKinley has a main health clinic on Lincoln Avenue and a resource center in the Illini Union. The resource center has limited hours, and mainly dispenses self-administered care and wellness promotion materials. Here is an incomplete list of what you can get at the resource center and McKinley. More details about the resource center here http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu/Wellness/info_ed.htm
- Cold care pack
- Tylenol or Advil (Generics)
- Pseudoephedrine (Generic Sudafed)
- Generic Nyquil
- Throat lozenges
- Wound care pack
- Band-aids, bandages, gauze
- Antibiotic ointment
- Condoms
- Lubricated or non-lubricated or mixed
- Unconfirmed, but I think I've heard they have non-latex condoms as well
- Spermicidal lubricant
- Home pregnancy test
- Latex Barriers
McKinley also provides many other services for students and it is worth looking at the website http://www.mckinley.uiuc.edu. A few notable services include free flu-shots and usually around finals they have free massages!
[edit] Quitting Smoking
McKinley sells a version of the Nicotine Patch at cost by prescription only so you need to make an appointment. A walk in appointment should be fine, as a nurse practitioner can prescribe this to you. They also have a pill which is supposed to help (I think they told me it is an antidepressant). I'm not too fond of using anti-depressents unless I absolutely have to though.
I was told by the nurse practitioner that 1 cigarrette is approximately equal to 1 mg of Nicotine, so keep that in mind when you are choosing what level patch to use, or whether to use the gum or not. They do not have the gum because it is more expensive, and apparently it is much more difficult to quit the gum, because its consumption is like smoking two cigarrettes at the same time (each piece of gum has 2 mg of Nicotine).
[edit] Software
There are several entities on campus that provide software for students either free or radically discounted.
- Central Stores + Micro Order Center (http://www.cstores.uiuc.edu/moc/moc.html)
The Micro Order Center is located in the Illini Union and can get you good deals on hardware and software.

- McAfee VirusScan 7.1 - Free
- Microsoft Office 2003 - $56.60 (pickup in MOC)

- SSH Client - Free (also available free for all platforms from ftp://ftp.ssh.com/pub/ssh/)

- Windows
- Cites has the VPN client http://www.cites.uiuc.edu
[edit] Hardware
- Apple Computers has discounts for University students, about 10% off of everything, including iPods! http://store.apple.com/1-800-780-5009/WebObjects/EducationIndividual.woa/70201/wo/tl6sEAk30VQI2GI2xRy1sCdKSlD/2.3.1.0.6.7
- Dell - 12% discount (http://premier.dell.com/portal/messages.aspx?c=US&l=en&s=hied&cs=RC810221)
- You can get some cool stuff from ECE Stores (like ethernet cables), really cheap! http://www.ece.uiuc.edu/ecestores/index.html
[edit] Athletic Facilities
- IMPE (Intramural Physical Education building) is being renovated but has some awesome facilities including tennis courts, 2 swimming pools, basket ball courts, squash/racquetball courts, weight-lifting and cardio-cross training equipment, etc.
- CRCE (aka WIMPE) is completely overhauling their facilities (near McKinley on the east end of campus). It should be awesome, opening tentatively late March/April 2005.
[edit] OASIS (Illini Union)
The OASIS center is tucked away in a corner of the basement level of Illini Union. http://www.union.uiuc.edu/services/oasis.aspx
- BodyWork Associates Massage Therapy - provides cheap student rates for totally rejuvenating massage in 10-75 minute sessions. Ideal for the occupational hazards associated with being a grad student. They're adding another location at the IMPE too (Fall 2007?).
- Relaxation Room - free for students. "Enjoy progressive muscle relaxation with a 20-minute audio-visual guided imagery experience"
[edit] Counseling
- The counseling center will provide free short term counseling for students. Note: they only provide short term counseling and will refuse you if they determine you need long term counseling, though they will give you good recommendations for outside care. The catch is that Graduate Insurance only covers 50% of the cost of regular counseling/therapy so you will have to pay for the other 50% yourself.
- For longer term care, the counseling center does offer group therapy and this is free to UIUC students. Another option for longer term care would be to see a Practicum student or an Intern. This is free to UIUC students as well.
[edit] News Server (Usenet)
- Although CITES retired its official news server, Tim Skirvin and others generously offered to run a volunteer server, news.ks.uiuc.edu . You should be able to connect via any machine on campus. The newsgroup uiuc.test is surprisingly active, though less so than in years past.
